Introduction

The Glow Worm Dell in a scenic viewpoint on the South Island of New Zealand, famous for its amazing glowworm light display in the limestone cave. These worms are not true fireflies, but midge-like flies in the family Keroplatidae. Their larvae live on the ceilings and walls of the cave and emit blue-green light from their body, illuminating the dark cave like a starry sky or a milky way. But in reality, the delicate light show is death traps set by the larvae which spin vertical silk strands and cover them with sticky droplets of saliva. By reflecting bioluminescence, the traps look like shining curtains, attracting flying insects in the caves to come.
