蜂巢在雨水來襲時受潮，長腳蜂忙進忙出的，吸取蜂巢的水份並排出巢外，保護幼蟲順利成長。長腳蜂會用木質纖維作為蜂巢的材料，靠著一雙發達的大顎，就能輕易刮取植物上的纖維，利用大顎先把嘴裡的纖維嚼碎，混合唾液和水將其變成紙漿，再慢慢用大顎把紙漿塑形，重複至少七八回，最後終於做出薄如紙張的巢壁。

As raindrops fall onto the nest, paper wasps are busy absorbing moisture and removing it from the nest to protect the larvae inside and allow them to smoothly develop. Paper wasps build their nests with wood fibers. They use a pair of well-developed mandibles to scrape the fibers, then chew them, mixing in saliva and water to make pulp, which they slowly shape. By repeating this process at least seven or eight times, they make thin, paper-like nest walls.
