Introduction

In the underwater world, how do shrimps and crabs avoid their natural enemies? As their pincers are not effective in fending off larger predators, they have evolved the ability to conceal themselves. For example, they can change color to blend in with their coral host. Image 1 was taken at Hejie, Kenting near the shore at a depth of about 15 meters. The soft coral crab, also known as the candy crab, lives among pink soft coral. It differs from other crab species, especially in terms of its ability to camouflage itself. Images 2 and 3 are of white and orange whip coral shrimp, both of which were taken off of Keelung’s Chaojing Park, near the shore at a depth of 20 meters. The color of this shrimp changes according to the color of the whip coral.
