潮間帶菟葵防曬保護盾 - 綠螢光蛋白

從〈照亮生命科學的地球微光〉一文得知,水母、珊瑚、海綿等海洋生物體內有螢光蛋白,可保護自身免於遭到太陽輻射傷害,並把可傷害細胞的紫外光,轉化成可見光。圖1:夜晚以白光LED手電筒當成光源,拍攝潮池中的菟葵。圖2:以紫外光照射菟葵。同為腔腸動物的菟葵,體內的綠螢光蛋白會把紫外光轉化為綠色螢光。此外,菟葵也會散出紅色光,那是共生的蟲黃藻體內葉綠素電子受激化返基態時,散發波長660nm左右的可見光所致。

Introduction

From an article on light in the life sciences, marine organisms, such as jellyfish, corals, and sponges, have fluorescent proteins that protect them from the sun’s rays and convert ultraviolet light that can damage cells into visible light. Image 1: At night, a white light LED torch is used as a light source for photographing zoanthids in a tide pool. Image 2: Zoanthids under ultraviolet light. Green fluorescent proteins in the zoanthids convert ultraviolet light into green fluorescent light. Red light from symbiotic algae is due to the excitation of chlorophyll electrons and their return to a ground state, which results in the emission of visible light at a wavelength of around 660nm.
