大透翅天蛾是日行性蛾類，在花叢間飛翔的身姿時常被誤認為蜂鳥。因具有透明的翅膀而得名，但牠的翅膀並不是一開始就是透明的。大透翅天蛾剛羽化時，翅膀上有一層棕色鱗片，這層鱗粉會在首次飛行時，隨著翅膀振動而掉落，最後才轉變成透明的翅膀。

The pellucid hawk moth is a diurnal moth that is often mistaken for a hummingbird when flying among flowers. Its wings are transparent, but not at first. When the pellucid hawk moth emerges, there is a layer of brown scales on its wings. These scales fall off due to vibration of the wings during its maiden flight, resulting in transparent wings.
